This version is an old revision to the guidelines and is preserved just for the sake of documentation. The most recent version is located at
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
.
Before we get to the rules themselves. Let’s start with some basic history. Oppo is a community which sprung up from the need for an offtopic area from Jalopnik. It has grown into its own over the years and is the largest, most populated, quickest moving community on Kinja. Oppo is made up of over 2500 authors from a wide range of backgrounds. It is this diversity which makes us special.
With the growth of Oppo to its current state, many things have changed. But much more has not. Kinja brought about the ability to moderate content and this suddenly meant that the previously self enforcing rules, that occasionally required either Jalopnik editors or Gawker Help’s intervention, could now be handled directly by the volunteer moderation team which runs the blog. The following rules are provided in addition to the Kinja !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The Rules
With apologies and thanks to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the rules of Oppositelock basically can be summed up thusly:
Don’t be a dick.
Seriously, don’t be a dick.
And don’t be a shit-stirrer either (here or elsewhere that will lead back to Oppo. Specifically this entails no trolling, no troll parties, and no posts attacking other Gawker/Kinja communities - Jezebel, Groupthink, Gawker, etc.).
Any NSFW material must be announced in the title of your post and be hidden behind a safe lead image. Additionally, we expect NSFW material to still follow all rules outlined here. If NSFW content is the first piece of media (picture or video) regardless of where it is in the post, Kinja will display it on the Oppo frontpage. (If you have doubts whether it’s NSFW,
it is
. This includes nudity, real or implied, gore, graphic accident footage or anything else that might get someone in trouble if their boss caught them reading it at work, assuming that you are allowed to browse the internet at work. Additionally, if the need to post this material exists, we are issuing a general challenge. Keep it classy and respectful. We’re not a porn site, the internet is full of porn, we don’t need more here.).
In addition to the above, there has been a lot of discussion recently regarding the place that NSFW materials have within this community. A group of people have wondered if it really has any business being here. Oppo is a very diverse community, even if it doesn’t look like it on the surface. Please consider the impact that any NSFW materials may have on other members of the community, both vocal and silent, before posting.
Political / Sensitive topics are welcome, however it is recommended that you announce such content in the title and that all sensitive material is posted “after the jump.”
Do not “doxx” anyone without their explicit permission (do not reveal personal details about a person which could be used to identify them).
When sharing material from other areas of Kinja, or from posts originating from within Oppositelock, keep all of the above rules in mind. (For more information on sharing / unsharing posts, please see !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ).
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The Details
OppositeLock is an off topic forum for everyone that happens to have a very obvious and intentional leaning toward subjects focused mainly on all things automotive, mechanical and generally of interest to folks who love all manner of contraptions that move. However, that doesn’t limit us to only those topics. We’re all humans here. We have lives, we will probably talk about them in detail. But this community is for everyone. If there are commenters from Groupthink/Jezebel/Gawker/Reddit/Mars who want to talk cars or pick our collective minds on the best planes from World War II? Awesome. The same goes for everybody else from anywhere else. We have, and will continue to welcome anyone who shows interest in joining and contributing / building our community and adhering to the community guidelines.
However, That is not to say that everyone will initially get author access or that everyone will be approved. In practice, unless we know you to be a troll by name, and you have not expressed a desire to join our community and understand that your prior behavior will probably, at least initially, color the reactions to you (we can, and do forgive, we rarely forget), in general we’ll probably add anyone who asks to join, but if you have no commenting history, we may ask you to wait a bit and comment here for a while before we add you. We want to make clear that while this isn’t Jalopnik, we do still mainly talk about cars and car related subjects, that this is an off topic forum that is a general purpose space and, accordingly, our aim is to make this a welcoming place that people feel comfortable interacting with each other in.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
In order to accomplish this, we strongly discourage people from making posts attacking other commenters or communities, starting inter-forum pissing contests, and purposefully picking fights with people you don’t get along with.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
We are not asking that everyone get along. We are not banning cathartic ranting. But we are asking that authors on this forum maybe think twice before posting about how much they hate Commenter X, especially when they know Commenter X will see the post, and everyone will start bitching about everyone else. No one enjoys seeing that go down. It’s awkward, it’s embarrassing, and most importantly, it damages the community. This would, in 99.99% of occasions, be considered a major violation of rules #1-3. What is that 0.01% of exception? Publicly being called out for behavior which violates the spirit and/or rules of the community which also will enrich the community by raising the levels of awareness.
The expectation is to treat others the way you would actually want people to treat you in a public space where consequences exist. Though this should go without saying, explicit or heavily implied sexism and racism will not be tolerated , period. This has little to do with “being PC” but is based on the expectation of being an open and respectful space. Personal attacks, call to arm posts, asking who the most reviled commenter or community here is, essentially any commenting behavior which specifically negatively attacks another commenter, area or member of staff with the intent to cause disruption or general harm to a specific commenter or to the community at large is verboten. You will be warned, suspended or banned depending on the severity of the issue and other criteria.
A major point of clarification. The moderators are not here to censor unpopular opinions. We are not asking you to post only along certain political views. We are not asking you to refrain from discussing touchy subjects. The moderators are not here to police your views . For the most part (see above) talk about anything you want – make your points respectfully and clearly, accept that not everyone will agree with what you have to say, and understand that this is an open forum where a lot of different people will read your post, and where anyone can reply to you. Above all, don’t be a dick.

The Moderators
I am one of the moderators. I am not the owner of the forum, that particular role belongs to Porsche9146. In the spirit of openness, here is a complete list of all volunteer moderators:

Delta Five Nine

As moderators, our goal is to essentially be invisible when we are in that role, occasionally reminding people of the rules, and our expected primary public function is welcoming newcomers and adding users to the community. I would like to add to this that all of the moderators are unpaid volunteers in this capacity. We do this in our free time, out of dedication to, and appreciation for, this community.
The launch of Kinja has given you, the commenters, access to a number of tools that used to be admin-only. This means less work for us, but it also means that you, the commenters, need to be more responsible for your conversations on this board. If someone is harassing you in response to something you wrote? Dismiss them. If the conversation is unproductive, walk away. If someone is chiding you for cursing too much, dismiss them and walk away. Basically, we expect you all to act like adults and therefore to handle conflict like adults (this applies even if you are not technically an adult).
If you run into a situation that you are unsure of how to handle, or if you find a troll or have a persistent issue with another commenter, feel free to contact any of the mods for assistance. You can find us on-site or email us at oppomoderator@gmail.com or contact us on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
Want to know what powers a moderator actually has? Check out this helpful !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Posting Access
There are two main levels of posting access to Oppo. One is the basic commenter and the other is authorship privileges.
Like on the main page, anyone is free to comment on any thread on Oppo. If you are not ‘followed’ by Oppo, your comment will show up as ‘grey’. This is not a judgment on your worth as a person or a commenter; it is simply how Kinja works.
Authorship privileges are granted by the mods. If you wish to post to Oppositelock, respond to one of our semi-regular request threads. These posts will always be under the tag “ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ” so that these posts can be easily found. You may not get authorship the first time you ask, but you are welcome to request again at any point. (See any request post for expanded details on this process.)
Authors are able to follow/unfollow commenters on behalf of ‘Oppositelock’. ‘Following’ moves a commenter from a ‘grey’ to a ‘black’. We trust authors enough to not need our permission to ‘follow’ a commenter – we wouldn’t have made you authors if we didn’t trust you in the first place. However, any author found to be abusing their posting access to mess with other commenter’s status on Oppo will have their authorship revoked, and possibly be banned from the forum.
Anything else I/we can clarify? Let me know and I, or one of the other mods will respond to you.

Thanks - although I have authorship privileges, I have never seen the rules all written down in one place. This helps.
But I will still resist posting pictures of our cats despite the latitude given on subject matter. Better this:

Technically... I think this is intolerant. Not discriminatory.
It is intolerant to specific behaviors (and even, in certain context, specific viewpoints). This is, technically a moderated forum. If history is any guide, some amount of the population, will, eventually be on the receiving end of the warnings and actions outlined within.
Edit: I am Pumbaa here:

I cannot emphasize this enough. NSFW content does not in any way contribute to this community. In fact, it's generally frowned upon. There are plenty of other places that you can find such material. Your best bet, at all times, is to leave it out.
While we technically do not ban it per se, we do keep very close tabs on it, and we reserve the right to moderate it as we feel necessary.
If for some inexplicable reason you absolutely must make a quick NSFW post or otherwise die in horrible agony, be sure to follow the posting guidelines detailed above. Failure to follow them once will likely result in a post delete and a brief warning; continuing failures will result in banning.

Always good to see this posted again.
I feel like lately people have been made to feel "uncomfortable" to post something that isn't directly cars.
Obviously we're all here for cars and things...well basically anything with a motor or engine in it...but we can still have a good time and every once in a while post something off topic. Especially if it's tagged in the title as *Off topic*

You sir, win OppositeLock, and possibly the whole internet, today. Well commented. Here are 2 more cats, 19 months ago, the day after we got them. Yoda (grey) so named because his ears stuck out in the petfinder.com profile. My girlfriend chose him, so I got to name him. A couple weeks before we drove out to get him (WAAAY the fuck out on Long Island), the shelter lady called. It seems he had a buddy, a black cat that wasn't eating, got put in with Yoda's litter, and started eating again when Yoda played with him. How could we say no?
And if you have a cat called Yoda, what else do you name a black one? Vader. He now weighs 14 pounds and the vet recently pronounced them both "ridiculously healthy." Not bad for a couple of cats rescued from construction sites .

They were cats no one cared about - when we got them, they both had ringworm, so of course both of us got a ringworm. Neutered at 6 months, healthy at last checkup, they play fight with each other, which keeps them from destroying the furniture. Vader wrecked one venetian blind, but that was only because he wanted to look out the window at pigeons on air conditioners.

I was going to try to find a picture of Alan Turing or Stephen Hawking with a car, but then I remembered the Terry Crews Toyota ad.
The challenge that we'd like to see is restraint, sexy doesn't have to mean undressed or actual nudity (US definition, we're a bunch of weird prudes who love porn, I can't even begin to understand how we made it this far). And beauty is in the eye of the beholder (still not sure what D&D has to do with this, but that's what they say).

I'd like to run a thought by you, mainly because this is a new post and the odds that you see it are high. I started out a lurker about 6 months ago, gained authorhood, and then mainly relegated back to lurking and the occasional comment. While I'd like to start making stories, I'd like to first make one (possibly two) articles on "How to get started to Jalop/Oppo/Kinja". Mainly giving a way for new lurkers or those who don't fully understand how Oppo (and others) works. Mainly in a form of database article. Such as providing links for:
1: How to get out of the gray
2: posting pictures/gifs/videos
3: Oppo guidelines and suggestions
4: Kinja suggestions and tips
I'd also like to make a separate article about FAQ's that people can link to newbies and give all the information at once (which they can then bookmark) and possibly add a suggestions page for those who design Kinja (no software should ever be stagnant and needs to move forward).
My question to you and the other moderators: "is this a good enough idea to post an article over it?"

Yeah, I love a good NSFW post as much as the next person (the fun kinds, not the "oh gods, I've never seen a pile of so many limbs [not a fun pile of limbs]), but seriously, they don't really need to be posted. When you look up Oppositelock on Google, "oppositelock jalopnik com nsfw" shows up pretty quick, and I don't think that shines too good a light on us. Add the fact that I remember some users actually having this site banned at work because of the NSFW content, and I think it becomes a bit of an issue. Just a thought on the matter.

Im glad you named the mods, I know who they all are but I can never remember them all at the same time. Its nice to have a list to refer to. While most of us can read between the lines of the old handbook, I think this was needed for the newer members. Another question: Im not trying to start anything with this, but I have seen instances where some of the GT crossover users have done things that could be classified as shit stirring (cant name anything specific off the top of my head) In the future would things like these be considered a bannable offense? I kind feel like the mods are more lenient on these users to avoid seeming sexist towards them

There have been times where we've had some internal debates within the group about off Oppo behaviors. While it's rarely a cause of something, it doesn't help when what does reach Oppo is directly due to actions elsewhere.
I felt that the list of mods would be a benefit to everyone. That way there are no questions about it. If they are on the list, they are. It's good to have some degree of verification of that.
And we are so large now that I felt a mild refresh was needed that incorporated some items and topics which have come up. (It could have been loner, but I restrained myself. =)

I can certainly understand where you're coming from, as a great deal of issues lately have stemmed from problems between male and female members of not only Oppositelock, but Gawker Media as a whole.
But, at the end of the day, if it seems like that, it's because there has been an unusual outburst against them lately, and in particular Jezebel.
As Gamecat235 pointed out, we aren't asking for everyone to like each other and get along. Rather, we simply ask that you agree to disagree with grace and maturity. Lately, the grace and maturity part have been lacking. Too many posts and comments that have been intentionally inflammatory and intentionally sour have been occurring, and we don't like that. We don't like the immaturity of people treating each other as being inferior, and we will step up to say something about it.
I realize that it seems that Oppo poster have been singled out, but that's mainly because no one from anywhere else on the a Gawker Media Network comes to Oppositelock. The only people around that have crossed the line on a repeated basis have been from Oppo; the rest of the world simply doesn't care.
And, ultimately, that's the goal - stop caring. Let Oppo be what it is ', and leave the rest alone

I agree with this statement entirely. It seems that some of the users have been trying to impart their views on other users and reprimanding them when they dont agree. For the most part these views are valid, but associated with posts so far from the issues they bring up. Like the pumpkin slut wheels post recently, While using that word wasnt the best idea, It was obviously not used in a offensive manner. It turned from an oppo user trying to be comedic about an upcoming purchase to an issue on womens rights. It seems we lack a level of separation between real issues and light hearted tom foolery.
When I comment on topics such as these, I impart a "to each their own" state of mind. Even If I dont agree with it, if its not blatantly sexist/cruel/offensive, I just acknowledge the author's right to his/her own opinions.

Thanks, I just started posting comments and your timing is perfect. Wow so much to learn, I'll do my best to not break any rules (Unless poor grammar is a sin) It's mostly common sense really. Once again thank. Thanks again

Work or school (or life)? I can't remember where you are with your progress. I think you had your MCATs? Or maybe I'm confusing you with someone else. In any case, if you don't have enough energy to snark, that's gotta be some heavy burden.

MCATs and applying to schools and figuring out what I want to do based on how that all goes.
Its been rough, to say the least.

I can't even begin to imagine, especially as someone who doesn't have a higher ed degree at all. I'm sure you've got plenty of ideas, but I could see how the uncertainty would be a lot to concern yourself with.

I wasn't sure how to get the attention of the mods, but I remembered this post and found it. http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/driving-an-aut… I don't think this is too bad, but this post on oppo made was clearly targeted at jbh who despite having differing views had been completely courteous and should not have had a post made just to get others to make fun of or attack him.

How do you impose rules if your moderators don’t follow rules? I’m not trying to be a wise ass or anything, it just seems like a conflict.

I don’t want to waffle on this, or provide a rushed answer, but I’m really busy at work today. Expect a response to this which explores this topic, because it is a valid question.
However, in short, my belief on this subject mirrors my beliefs regarding how this should ideally work in society. Those who are responsible for upholding and enforcing the rules, regulations and laws of the land and the people are those who should lead by example and follow the rules as spelled out and documented. In theory, no one should know them better, or be better equipped to follow them and that is not an unreasonable expectation in my mind.
(more to follow later).
ETA: Just because someone who is meant to enforce the rules doesn’t follow them, does not logically mean that the rules do not apply. In other words, if a police officer speeds, you don’t suddenly gain the lawful ability to speed because they do.

I apologize I should have clarified from my original response as I was joking about the rules not applying. What I was getting at will moderation change because there are those who don’t abide.
That being said I appreciate the response.
